Choosing the Right Service
We offer both emergency (same day) and routine appointments. Other services offer help with a range of conditions. Using services appropriately ensures that healthcare providers work more efficiently for everybody. Some conditions like minor coughs and colds can be managed at home. These online resources offer very helpful information and advice on self-care, and when to call for help.

You don't need an appointment to refer yourself for the following:

Pharmacies participating in the Minor Ailments Scheme are able to provide treatments for free if you do not pay for prescriptions. Here is a list of participating pharmacies in Southampton (PDF, 81KB).

The Urgent Treatment Centre is based at the Royal South Hants
- Cuts and minor wounds that require stitching or bandaging
- Splinters
- Foreign bodies in ears and noses
- Sprains and strains
- Suspected fractures or breaks of arms, lower legs, feet. These can be X-rayed and casted as required
- Wound infections
- Minor burns
- Minor head injuries (unless on blood thinning medication)
- Animal bites
- Minor eye injuries
- Minor injuries to back, shoulder and chest
- Treat minor illnesses / fevers – such as coughs/urine infections
You can get an urgent appointment with an opticians participating in the Minor Eye Conditions Service.
- Red eye or eyelids
- Dry, gritty or uncomfortable eyes
- Eye discharge or watery eye
- Recently occurring flashes or floaters
- Painful eye
- Ingrowing lashes
- Recent and sudden loss of vision
- Foreign body in the eye
Please call 023 8120 6592 before attending eye casualty unless you have any of the following:
- A chemical injury
- Severe trauma such as a penetrating eye injury
- Total loss of vision
- Excruciating eye pain
- Your eyelid is so swollen the eye cannot be seen at all
- Crushing or tight chest pain
- Severe breathlessness
- Severe allergic reaction
- Unconscious or very drowsy
- Suspected stroke
- Fitting (new or lasting over 5 minutes)
- Nosebleed lasting longer than 20 minutes
- Bleeding very heavily in the last 30 minutes
- Very unwell child
- Head injuries
- Severe headache
- Traumatic injury (i.e worktool, road traffic accident)
- Suspected spinal injury
- Severe burns and scalds
- Poisoning or swallowing foreign bodies
